Summary

There are two types of luck: prescriptive and descriptive. Luck is not a supernatural phenomenon and certainly is not something a few people have since birth while others lack; luck is the name of a situation when the law of probability rolls in our favor. We tend to forget how many times someone tried to reach their goal; once that person reaches the goal, we just say he or she got lucky. Fortunately, there are many ways that you can increase your chance of success, to be lucky

What is Luck?

Luck or chance is an event which occurs beyond your control, without regard to your willingness, intention, or any desired result. As for categories, there are at least two senses people usually mean when they use the term “you got lucky”, the prescriptive sense and the descriptive sense.

In the prescriptive sense, luck is a supernatural and deterministic concept; there are forces which prescribe certain events to occur. Similar to the way laws of physics will do. It is the prescriptive sense that people mean when they say they “do not believe in luck”.

In the descriptive sense, luck is a word people give after the occurrence of events which they find to be fortuitous, and maybe improbable. Cultural views of luck vary from perceiving luck as a matter of random chance to attributing to such explanations of faith or superstition. For example, the Romans believed in the embodiment of luck as the goddess Fortuna, while the philosopher Daniel Dennett believes that “luck is mere luck” rather than a property of a person or thing. Carl Jung viewed luck as synchronicity, which he described as “a meaningful coincidence”. Luck even can shape a physical form in symbols which are popular worldwide and take many forms.

Does it really exist?

Some people seem to have been born lucky. Everything they touch turns to gold. Others are dogged by misfortune. Confident people tend to attribute success to themselves and failure to bad luck. This is empowering and builds self-esteem. Others who attribute success to luck and failure to themselves will wait for luck to guide them and will eventually become insecure as they rarely take credit for their successes.

People who are perceived lucky are significantly more extrovert and open than others. They are twice as likely to smile and engage in eye contact as the so-called unlucky people. This means that the lucky ones are perceived by the outside world as being friendlier and more approachable. They will therefore talk to more people and basically network better meetings. More people means the lucky person increases the chance of meeting that certain 1 person who can help you get the job done. For example, these events would normally be contributed to be lucky while in reality it is due to the fact that you are trying to be more social and interact with more people in order to maximize the possibility of such events to happen; a second, though less important characteristic of lucky people, is the fact that they are only half as anxious as unlucky people. This means that they are generally more relaxed and more able to notice and utilize opportunities.

Students getting results from their exams often attribute their success to luck, while others attribute it to the fact that they studied well and therefore empower themselves by taking credit for their work.

here are some practical ways to change your luck:

1. Be opportunistic

They have the ability to take advantage of novel and often conceal opportunities when they arise. People, who practice opportunism, see opportunities all around them and are able to use them to their advantage.

2. Be optimistic

Luck isn’t limited to objective findings; as the saying goes, one person’s poison is another’s cure. In other words, if an optimist and a pessimist both win the same prize in a lottery, only the optimist will appear to be lucky. Optimism helps you see the advantages in any given situation. Lucky people with an optimistic outlook are more able to identify the silver lining in any given situation.

3. Think out of the box

It often involves looking for loopholes and situations from multiple perspectives. Two companies are competing with similar products. The one that thinks out-of-the-box with an innovative redesign or a novel marketing strategy is the one who will appear to be lucky.

4. Be insightful

Having insight involves integrating explicit and implicit knowledge with an understanding of both yours and others’ social situations and emotions. The insightful have higher emotional and social intelligence. Being able to observe the situation carefully, people understand unspoken issues in a social situation better and act accordingly. Lucky people seek knowledge and experiences and make the best use of their insight.

5. Be proactive

Just try to be proactive rather than reactive. By that we mean you make your own future. And when you can take responsibility for your words, actions, and behavior, you have more control of your destiny. There are three kinds of people: Those who make things happen; those who watch things happen; and those who wonder what just happened. Lucky people create the best atmosphere for themselves in which they can perform best and, eventually, they can harvest better results.

6. Be Mindful

If you don’t have a keen sense of situational awareness, how would you set your mind? Whatever you attract during a day can be set in your mind. It’s your choice to make them either positive by arranging them towards success or not. What’s going on around you as well as inside you, how you’re thinking and feeling, altogether make your mindset. It works moment by moment and make you mindful.

You Can Be Lucky, Too

Most people will tell you luck is about being at the right place with the right people at the right time–but there’s a lot more than that to luck. So, let’s see how you can enjoy the benefits that the lucky ones have:

Luck in business and how you can be lucky too

You can be lucky, too.

1. Position yourself

The first step toward improving your luck is to acknowledge that luck exists. Lucky people position themselves for luck by organizing their lives and work so they can embrace opportunities and weather storms.

2. Plan, but be ready to bail

Lucky people know their plans may not always work out, and they’re careful not to let themselves grow too confident or relaxed. They anticipate rapid changes, take calculated risks, and most certainly do not go all in with irrevocable commitments. They’re ready to bail if they have to; they know luck is not something to lean on. So, they are always ready for plan B, and never get dejected.

3. Remember, luck comes and goes

It’s not true that lucky people feel unassailably secure, more than those refusing to relax. They keep their options open and explore new possibilities. And one more point is that they never get upset. That’s their strongest spot. Furthermore; if they ever miss a fortune, they would never blame themselves. They just don’t feel responsible for their luck. Instead, they look for ways to turn it around.

4. Partner up

They tend to have great partners. Of course, plenty of people do well on their own, but a solid partnership lets you build on two sets of strengths and gives you a sounding board for new ideas. It can also encourage you towards success when feeling frustrated.

5. Stay busy

Lucky people always seem to have more than one venture going on at the same time, so if one thing doesn’t work, out there are plenty of other options. A consistent lucky person is someone seeing life for what it is, and what it is not. That one does the best in order to be flexible, agile, observant, optimistic, and understanding. They know that sometimes not getting what you want is a brilliant stroke of luck, and sometimes getting what you want happened because you went out and got it. So, never think of giving up. Bear in mind that those who give up never achieve success and luck doesn’t follow them either.

Bottom line

Luck has a pure relationship with success and positive matters. All mentioned so far is to show you that YOU alter your luck and move it in a way that lucky people usually do. If you consider a matter disappointing, you naturally get a bit upset about it, thus luck tends to leave. On the contrary, if you follow the principles and never give up, you can definitely change your thoughts and eventually your luck to benefit you and your goals.
